Look how we are controlling the city. We will crack down on the US troops." 16. Rocket being launched, nearly misses brick wall 17. Establisher of news conference 18. SOUNDBITE: (English) Major General Rick Lynch, US Army: "Today I received some spurious reports about current operations in Ramadi. Allow me to correct them. As of 14:00 today in Ramadi there has been only one insurgent attack and that attack was an RPG, rocket propelled grenade, that was launched with no effect against a combined Iraqi security force and a coalition force checkpoint. So the idea that there's this massive uprising in insurgents in Ramadi to have retaken control of the town is incorrect." 19. Lynch leaves STORYLINE Insurgents attacked several US bases, the governor's office and the Iraqi registration office in Ramadi, 113 kilometres (70 miles) west of the capital Baghdad, with mortars and rockets on Thursday before dispersing, residents said. The attacks occurred as local tribal leaders and US military officials were to hold their second meeting in a week at the governor's office in Ramadi's city centre. Residents said that within minutes, scores of masked gunmen, believed to be members of Jordan-born militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's al-Qaida in Iraq group, took control of many of the city's streets, but dispersed after launching attacks with mortars and Russian-made Katyusha rockets. It's unclear how much of Ramadi was, and still is, under insurgent control. A local AP Television News cameraman who was in central Ramadi at the time of the attacks was allowed by the insurgents to film as they toted automatic rifles and rocket launchers through the streets. It wasn't clear if the attacks left any casualties, but most residents fled to their homes after the exchange began. Ramadi is the provincial capital of the western Anbar province, a Sunni stronghold, where clashes between insurgents and US and Iraqi troops have left hundreds of people dead in the past two years. US and Iraqi troops launched a joint operation near Ramadi on Wednesday, sweeping through an area used to rig car bombs. About 500 Iraqi troops joined two thousand US marines, soldiers and sailors in a move to clear insurgents from an area on the eastern side of the Euphrates river near Hit, 85 miles (136.8 kilometres) west of Baghdad, the US command said in a statement. However, in Baghdad the US military were quick to counter the images of insurgents the video showed.
