GO trains connect Union Station in Downtown Toronto to Barrie in the north, Oshawa in the east, and Niagara Falls and London, too. Metrolinx, the operator of GO Transit, is in the midst of significant infrastructure upgrades under its GO Expansion program, aimed at transforming the service from a commuter-focused system to one that provides all-day, high-frequency rail services. This includes the electrification of 600 km of tracks, new signalling systems, grade separations, and more. The system improvements are expected to increase train frequency to every 15 minutes during peak hours, making GO Transit function more like a subway system. In 2023, GO Transit carried an impressive 50 million passengers, a substantial increase as ridership recovered post-pandemic​. The overall budget for the GO Expansion program is estimated at around CAD 70 billion, making it one of the largest transit infrastructure investments in Ontario’s history. This budget includes station upgrades, track improvements, and the purchase of new electric trainsets​. The ongoing station improvement projects also focus on enhancing accessibility, adding secure bike storage, and upgrading digital signage to improve customer experience​.
