Troubleshoot and repair old BOSE remotes

Video shows common problems, how to test and repair. Requires some repair and soldering skill. Do this at your own risk. https://buttonworx.com/17-bose #1 Problem: Broken Antennas A broken antenna can be intermittent. When you shake, rattle or bang the remote a cracked antenna wire may gain or lose contact. Simply pressing buttons hard enough can wiggle the remote enough so that sometimes a signal gets through. This can APPEAR like button issues. Button problems will almost always effect only the heavily used buttons. If all of your buttons stop working well (even buttons you rarely or never use) then it's not button failure. The only rare exception is in remotes with silver ink snap domes instead of rubber conductive buttons such as RC18T and RC38T. In those remotes it is possible for the silver to rub off with heavy use and stick to a button causing a short circuit. In THAT case a failed button can prevent all other buttons from working. Battery Corrosion can make a mess. If you know there is battery corrosion it needs to be cleaned and not ignored. You will have to open the remote and clean it with q-tips and isopropyl alcohol or IT WILL eventually break your remote. It might take weeks, months or even years but it will never stop unless you clean it. Use an AM radio You can use an AM radio to "hear" button presses on your remote. If the remote has power, buttons work and the antenna is not broken then the signal the remote puts up can be heard over AM. It can be tricky to tune it right. The position and angle of the remote is critical. The range is very short (an inch or two). This will help you determine if the remote is working. If you can't hear it on the AM radio then there is something wrong with the remote. If you can hear it then there is something wrong on the main radio side.
