Arita is known as the birthplace of Japanese porcelain, discovered in 1617 by a Korean potter. Arita potters quickly arranged for Chinese potters to come and advise them, and within a decade or so, historical Arita was producting work for Japan and export. Imari is the port where much of the work was sent abroad, and these two towns are known as the porcelain capital of Japan. Our trip from Karatsu to Arita involves little trains and mountain landscapes. Arriving, we visit the information center, and then walk up the main pottery street, including Maruta Munehiko, producing hand made work, and many other shops. We visit the original porcelain mines, and then go to the ceramic materials and tool shop. Later in the day, we have a chance to be welcomed at Shingama, one of the last cobalt blue porcelain kilns making work by hand. This was arranged by some friends of the kiln director who we met in Kurashiki, and after a lovely tour, he follows our progress walking to the station, and waves to us as we depart home to our hotel in Karatsu for the evening. #explorejapan #japan #japanesepottery #ceramicadventures #japaneseculture #japanesetea #travel #yakimono #porcelain #japanesevideo #noborigama #karatsu #JR #arita #imari #shingama www.ceramicadventures.com Ceramic Adventures Travel www.instagram.com/ceramicadventurestravel
