Russian Foreign Policy - The Re Emergence of Russian Regional Power

Support me on Patreon -   / michaelrossipolisci   Michael Rossi Department of Political Science Masters Program in United Nations and Global Studies Rutgers University Russian Foreign Policy - Summer 2022 The introductory lecture to this six-week online course examines the (re)emergence of Russia as a regional power in the area of the Former Soviet Union, Eastern and Southeastern Europe, the Middle East, and the Developing World. It also examines how Russia is understood through the theoretical lenses of Realism, Liberalism, and Constructivism, which helps us to firther understand why Russia is so misunderstood in the Western world due to perceptions and misconceptions of Russia that (mis)characterize and (mis)diagnose Russia, Vladimir Putin, and the Russian people within preset stereotypes shaped by memories of the Soviet Union, the 1990s, and the West's own sense of moral superiority within a lens of liberal democracy and global capitalism. The lecture also looks at some of the popular assessments of Russia from Realists like John Mearscheimer and Steven Walt, and while it notes Realism is a good way to understand the current global multipolar power arrangement, it doesn't go far enough in explaining why Russia is viewed as so belligerent and aggressive by some countries over others. Thus, Constructivism is a better way of answering questions of why Russia is doing what it's doing, how Russia sees itself in the world today, and how Russia is seen by others.
