They developed custom mass spectrometry nanopore ion sources to deliver single ions of individual amino acids and peptides directly into high vacuum from biologically relevant aqueous solutions. This work makes significant improvements over conventional electrospray ionization methods. This is a huge step forward for mass spectrometry—a technique used to measure the mass of molecules—and its significance in proteomics, where understanding protein structure and function is critical for advancing biology and medicine.
