With the thrill of exploration in the air, our crew—Katya, Kolya, Svetlana, and Armen—set off to dive into Ios’s rich history and incredible landscapes. Our journey began at the Skarkos Archaeological Museum, where we marveled at the ruins of an Early Bronze Age settlement. Skarkos is remarkably well-preserved, offering a rare glimpse into the prehistoric Cycladic civilization. The terraces, some with walls as high as three meters, sprawl across a hill near Gialos Beach, creating a dramatic setting that evokes the early days of Aegean culture. From Skarkos, we hiked up to Chora, Ios's hilltop settlement, where narrow pathways and charming whitewashed buildings led us to the iconic Church of Panagia Gremniotissa. This church, known as the "Virgin Mary of the Steep Cliff," perches precariously on a cliff edge, its blue dome and tall bell tower standing as a beacon over the island. We couldn’t resist pausing here to take in the sweeping views of the harbor and rugged hills, an awe-inspiring panorama that left us breathless. Continuing our day, we visited the old windmills of Chora and concluded at Agia Irini Church. Built in the 17th century, this remarkable church has two altars—one for Orthodox and one for Catholic worship—a testament to the island's historical blend of traditions. The serene setting and unique design make it a must-see on Ios. From ancient history to divine views, our day on Ios was unforgettable, a perfect blend of exploration, culture, and breathtaking landscapes that made this stop on our Cycladic journey truly special.
