Samudra Manthan || Baba Taraknath || Tarakeshwar Temple History || Lord Shiva || Mahadev || Sati

As per Hindu mythology, a number of things were released from the Ocean of Milk during the Samudra Manthana process. One of them was Halahala, a lethal poison. Lord Shiva drank Halahala poison to save the world. He was then suffering from severe pain. His consort Tara stopped the poison to flow any further by immediately placing her hand on his throat. Taraknath is a violent form of Lord Shiva who drank Halahala during Samudra-manthan. He grants his devotees an honest healthy life. As per a legend, Vishnu Das, a devotee of Lord Shiva, immigrated with his family to West Bengal from Ayodhya. Initially, local people did not accept him and his family members. He then proved his innocence by grabbing a red-hot iron bar in his hand and became famous amongst the locals. Some days later, Vishnu's brother found out a place in the nearby forest. A cow used to release her milk at a specific location every day in that forest. The brothers were able to discover a Shiva Linga on that spot. There was no end to the Shiva linga as it was a sayambhu linga. They had a divine dream that the Shiva linga was a manifestation of Lord Shiva in the form of Baba Taraknath. A temple was constructed on the exact same place. The temple has been reconstructed several times over the subsequent years. This Shiva temple is one of major pilgrimage spot of the Tarakeswar city of West Bengal, India. There is a Dudh-pukur water tank on the right side of the main temple. Pilgrims take a dip into the Dudh-pukur water tank in order to get salvation. It is widely believed that the water in the tank possesses medicinal properties and a bath here can keep one healthy.
