River Fire (New Haven CT) 4th Alarm Incident Date: 10/30/24 Incident Time: 6:46am Incident Location: New Haven CT Incident Nature: Structure Fire/4th Alarm Incident Details: At 6:46 a.m., the New Haven Fire Department was dispatched to Fairy St for the reported structure fire. C-33 was the first on scene finding a large 2 story brick industrial building located on River St with smoke showing from the delta side and called for the working fire. Due to a combination of hoarding conditions and a confusing layout of the building, a 2nd alarm was called. At the same time, the 2nd alarm was called T-1, reported fire blowing out the 2nd floor window on the delta side with the middle of the building being fully involved. Members worked to place 3 two and a half attack lines into operation. Crews also cut holes in the roof to access the fire. During operations, 2 victims were located on the 2nd floor and were successfully rescued. At the same time, the victims were removed, and the command called for a 3rd alarm as well as a full evacuation of the building and the roof due to deteriorating fire conditions. Members pulled out of the building and transitioned into a defensive attack, and a collapse zone was established. A short time later, after the evacuation, it was reported that the roof started to bow. Crews worked to set up ladder pipes as well as master streams to conduct a "surround and drawn" opposition. Crews also cut the garage door open to access the fire. Due to an imminent roof collapse, the collapse zone was pushed back. A 4th alarm was then struck to bring in more water and manpower. The 4th alarm also brought in multiple mutual aid companies to the scene. Crews placing 3 ladder pipes, 2 deck guns, 4 two and a half attack lines, and a 3 inch line into operation. After several hours and more than 100 firefighters, the fire was placed under control. Crews remained on scene for the majority of the day fighting hot spots and conducting overhaul operations. Two people were reported to be transported to an area hospital with miner smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported. The New Haven Fire Marchals Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
