Yogurt and Diabetes

One of the foods my patients question- "Can I Eat This" - is yogurt. And, as with most foods, I can tell you that yogurt is an individual choice, but there is most definitely a yogurt for you. Find out more by watching. Visit my website for more help with diabetes management at https://diabeteseveryday.com I often have patients contact me. Sometimes they'll even text me a photo asking, "Can I eat this?" My first response is always to change the question to, "Should I eat this?" But I understand that it's easy to get overwhelmed by the different choices, and I'm going to take those questions and show you how I make those decisions. Welcome back to Diabetes Every Day for our series on Can I Eat This? Today's episode is going to be about yogurt. I've been getting this question a lot. Simply, "Can I eat yogurt? Is that good for me? Can I have it?" The answer is yes, but what I want to do is take a look at some individual yogurts that I have here today. There's a couple important messages, again, for looking at the best choice. One thing is that we want to read the food label, the nutrition facts label. That's a great guide to help you in knowing how many carbohydrates, how many grams of protein, grams of fat, calories. All the information that you need is on that nutrition facts label. So that step one is what we want to do to identify if I can eat this, what's the best choice, is to look at the food label. All of these yogurts have a good source of protein, these in particular that I have here, and they also have other health benefits like calcium and potassium. For people with diabetes, we need to really focus on the total grams of carbohydrate. So let's take a look at the label, because that's the first step, remember, is that we want to use that nutrition facts panel, the label, to see the carbohydrate. With this product there is 35 grams of carbohydrate for the serving and this serving is the whole container, which is slightly bigger than these other yogurts. This product has a 15 grams of carbohydrate per serving. This product has 14 grams of carbohydrate per serving. This one has nine grams of carbohydrate, and this product has five grams of carbohydrate per serving. What you want to do, remember, when we're eating a diet for a meal plan for diabetes, it's very individualized. I'm not saying that one of these over another is the best choice, because it's an individual choice. How many grams of carbohydrate are you having at a meal time, whether it's breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or snack time that you want to use one of these yogurts. The bottom line is you can fit yogurt into your diabetes meal plan. Something for you to do, don't forget to subscribe, press the red button.
