Samarai Island, the picturesque and charming tiny Island and historically the colonial administrative capital of the Milne Bay Province. It used to be called the "Pearl of the Pacific", in the 1900's. It is located along the China Straits and is in the Samarai Murua Electorate and District consisting of the Logeia Is, the Engineering Groups of Islands and the Louisiade Archipelago Groups of Islands. Samarai Island was a significant site for trading and is a stopover between Australia and East Asia and had the commercial heavy weights in Burns Philp and the Steamships. It is well known in those times and also holds some special projects developments in the likes of the "Pearl Farming" on Sariba Island, the famous Boat Building Sites and the Boat Slipways. Due to it's small size for any further infrastructural developments, the capital title was moved to Alotau, now Alotau Town in July of 1968. It used to harbors the peaceful Samarai people.
