UN Fact-Finding Mission’s Report on Venezuela: Crimes against humanity

The Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela, created by the UN Human Rights Council in 2019, presented its report to the Council on September 16th. The document, over 400 pages long, offers key evidence and chilling details of the extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detentions, and cases of torture and other cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment committed in the country since 2014. The Mission concludes that these abuses follow a systematic and widespread course of conduct, and thus amount to crimes against humanity. Additionally, the report states that senior regime officials (including Nicolás Maduro himself) are not only well aware of the crimes but directly involved in their commission, in some cases giving the orders and supplying the necessary resources.
