The Washington Consensus refers to a set of economic policy prescriptions and reforms that were widely promoted and implemented by international organizations, such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, during the 1980s and 1990s. The term "Washington Consensus" was coined by economist John Williamson in 1989. The Washington Consensus includes ten policy recommendations that were considered essential for promoting economic growth and stability, particularly in developing countries. These policies include: Fiscal discipline Redirection of public spending towards priority areas such as health, education, and infrastructure Tax reform to broaden the tax base and reduce tax evasion Interest rate liberalization and financial sector reform Exchange rate liberalization and trade liberalization Privatization of state-owned enterprises Deregulation of markets and reduction of barriers to entry Protection of property rights Legal and regulatory reform to encourage private sector development Opening up to foreign investment and increasing competition.
