I have yet to meet someone who doesn't like ladybirds. Even if you aren't fond of spiders and beetles, we seem to love these gorgeous bugs with their shiny shells and domino dots. I need to paint a couple to complete a mammoth beetle paintings, so join me in this simple tutorial. I will show you how to use a yellow underpainting to stop your reds looking washed out and pink. How to work wet in wet watercolour to get jewel like colours, how to lift out highlights from wet or dry paint, how to layer to get depth of colour and how to add enough detail to make a convincing ladybird. All this from one little insect. I will also show how to build up a composition and clean it up, in case you want to paint your own natural history museum. Well apart from the fact they are beautiful, it's for the monthly challenge taking place over on FaceBook.
