However, it is often misunderstood and improperly implemented by many people. Many individuals believe that management by objectives involves setting arbitrary goals and instructing workers to achieve them within a specified timeframe. This misconception overlooks the true essence of MBO. In reality, management by objectives entails a more collaborative process. The manager sets a goal, but it is not arbitrary. The goal is subject to independent and mutual agreement between the manager and the workers. Unfortunately, many individuals either lack the awareness of this crucial step or find it too cumbersome to seek buy-in from their workforce. This omission can lead to disastrous outcomes. However, when the goal is agreed upon by both the manager and the workers, remarkable results can occur. It becomes a win-win situation where the goal is achieved, the manager can harness the full potential of the workforce, and the workers feel motivated and rewarded. Implementing management by objectives may present challenges for some managers. It requires investing time and effort to foster a good relationship with the workforce, which can be a roadblock for those lacking such rapport. Nevertheless, if the collaborative aspect of MBO is embraced, the benefits can be substantial. For instance, envision a scenario in which a boss sets a goal of constructing 40 houses in a week, instead of the usual average of 20. Without employee agreement, this goal may be perceived as unattainable and demotivating. Workers may disengage, resulting in a subpar performance. However, if the goal is reasonably agreed upon by both the manager and the workers, it can lead to impressive outcomes. In summary, management by objectives is not about setting arbitrary goals but about establishing mutually agreed-upon objectives between the manager and the workers.
