MEGA BLOCO (STREET PARTY) CARMELITAS | Rio de Janeiro

https://hy.page/travellers    / @acedtvl      / @volpewhereareyou   #travel #fun #beach #adventure Bloco das Carmelitas came out for the first time in the second half of 1990 to pay homage to Laurinda Santos Lobo, a socialite whose house hosted the hottest parties in Rio de Janeiro, in the Santa Teresa neighborhood, in the first decades of the 20th century. Initially composed of peladeiros who played football on the ground next to the aforementioned Laurinda's house (today the Parque das Ruínas), the following year the group already opened and closed the festivities in the neighborhood, with two outings – one on the Friday before carnival and another on Shrove Tuesday –, which is repeated to this day. As Santa Teresa emerged from the founding of the Carmelitas Convent, the revelers and lovers of the neighborhood gave the block the name Carmelitas and created the legend that, every year, a nun jumps over the convent wall to play carnival on Friday and returns to the cloister on Tuesday, and it has become a tradition in the block for men and women to wear nun's habits on their heads, so that the “runaway” can play in peace, without being easily recognized. In addition to the nun costumes, a large doll also became part of the group, which presents itself to the public as the most lively Carmelite. When it did not yet have sponsors, the group maintained itself through the sale of t-shirts. To create these t-shirts, he invited cartoonists, designers and visual artists, including Aliedo, Cassio Loredano, Jô Oliveira, Selarón, Ana Durães and Marcia Cisneiros. With the arrival of sponsors, the sale of t-shirts is no longer a determining factor in funding the fashion shows, but the t-shirts continue to be an important part of our identity.
