Recorded in September 2020 in the grandiose setting of the Philharmonie de Paris, Brad Mehldau's solo concert is part of this same dynamic. Accustomed in the past to revisiting numerous rock songs, the musician starts his set with "I Am The Walrus," an extract from the Magical Mystery Tour. He follows up with "Your Mother Should Know," a catchy track with a perfect melodic through-line. Elsewhere, the other covers are just as imaginative and are mostly taken from the so-called studio period, the most creative phase that the Fab Four gave us. By turns sober and lyrical, here the American pianist reinvents a whole part of pop culture.
