Thoomani Madathu | Thiruppavai | Andal | Hamir Kalyani This is the 9th verse from the work “Thiruppavai” composed by Goddess Andal. தூமணி மாடத்துச் சுற்றும் விளக்கெரிய தூபம் கமழ துயில் அணை மேல் கண் வளரும் மாமான் மகளே! மணிக்கதவம் தாள் திறவாய்! மாமீர்! அவளை எழுப்பீரோ? உம் மகள் தான் ஊமையோ அன்றிச் செவிடோ அனந்தலோ ஏமப் பெருந்துயில் மந்திரப்பட்டாளோ? மாமாயன் மாதவன் வைகுந்தன் என்றென்று நாமம் பலவும் நவின்று ஏல் ஓர் எம்பாவாய். ENGLISH TEXT tūmaṇi māḍattuc cuṛṛum viḷakkeriya | dhūpam kamazha tuyil aṇaimēl kaṇvalarum | māmān mahaḷe! maṇi kadavam tāḷ tiṛavāy | māmīr! avaḷai yezhuppīrō? un mahaḷ tān | umaiyō? anṛic ceviḍo? anantalō? | ēmap perunduyil mandira pāttāḷō? | mā māyan mādhavan vaikuntan ennennu | nāmam palavum navinnēlōr empāvāy || Translation A nice bed, comfortable and a conducive environment make for good deep sleep. In this verse Sri Andal and her friends struggle to wake up a girl (a relative – her Uncle’s daughter) who is sleeping in a nice bed, with nice lights and scented aromas so soundly that they suspect she has become deaf, not hearing anything, dumb not responding to their calls and so overcome by sloth so as not to wake up and come to open the ornate door. The girls plead to the mother of the girl to wake her up to which she responds, sing the many many names of the Lord as Maamayan, Madhavan and Vaikunthanan and being a pious and God loving girl, she will wake up on hearing the Lord’s names being chanted.
