Cultivating Wisdom 21st October 2024 Session 1 The current approach to evaluating wheat varieties in recommended list trials may not address the needs of organic farmers whose production systems require traits not always valued in conventional systems. Researchers at the Organic Research Centre in collaboration with organic grain producers have worked on a networked approach to on-farm variety testing since 2017. This is part of a wider programme of work at the Organic Research Centre to understand the needs of organic farmers when it comes to variety development and choice (Costanzo et al., 2021). This presentation will include a summary of experiences and reflect on the benefits of working directly with farmers within a real-world context. This will cover how the approach has delivered robust and relevant data whilst also delivering real-world impact. The ongoing legacy of the work includes the development of an engaged participatory network that is driving forward improvements in organic wheat cultivation as well as a methodology and body of experience that can be applied to other crops and contexts. This work would not be possible without the collaboration and support of the many organic farmers who continue to host trials, collect data, and share their invaluable expertise in wheat varietal selection, helping to advance sustainable and resilient farming practices.
