The World's Greatest Race Aka 1932 Grand National (1932)

Full title reads: "Pathe Super Sound Gazette. Recorded by R.C.A. Photophone system -... Exclusively presents the only authentic & official pictures of ... The World's Greatest Race. The Grand National 1932. Described by Capt. G H Gilbey, the famous Racing Journalist of the 'Daily' & 'Sunday Express'." Aintree Race Course, Lancashire. Captain Gilbey standing on top of one of the stands, wearing a bowler hat and binoculars. Shots in the parade ring or paddock. Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII, Duke of Windsor) walks over. Various horses are led around the parade ring, crowds watch from the rail. High angle shot of horses and jockeys being led out of the parade ring by their stable lads. High angle shot as the horses are led out onto the course. The horses are lined up at the start. They're off! Slow motion shot of horses taking jump. Several fallers (no surprise in the National). Another fence - this time at normal speed - one rider falls and is kicked by his mount as it gets up. More fences and more fallers. Nice shot from low angle at the side of one fence, shot in slow motion. At one fence a loose horse refuses and knocks over several runners. One of the fallers is dragged away by a St. John's ambulance man. Great slow motion shots of horses attempting the water jump. C/U Captain Gilbey gazing through his binoculars from the roof of the grandstand. Horses round the corner. Yet more fences and fallers. Good shots of the two leading horses. The two leading horses pass the winning post - it is quite a close thing. The horses are led into the enclosure. The winning horse is surrounded by large crowds and is given a police escort. The winner's enclosure is surrounded by people. The rider of the winning horse, Forbra, raises his hat. He is congratulated by the horses owners and connections. C/U the head of the winning horse. Pathe logo and cockerel. NB: Sound quality is quite poor. FILM ID:667.01 A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ. EXPLORE OUR ONLINE CHANNEL, BRITISH PATHÉ TV.
