Zero-Trust in Action: The Future of Email Security

Zero-trust is a widely accepted cybersecurity principle, but it’s oddly absent from email security—until now. Take an inside look at Shield, where every email is treated as a potential threat until you decide it's safe, giving you complete control over your inbox. Zero-trust has been oddly absent from email security—until now. It’s at the core of Shield. Let’s see how it works. It starts with a feature called first-time sender review. This is where safe messages that have passed through Shield’s threat detection decision layer arrive. You can review first time senders directly in the review folder in any email client. Open the message to read its contents, then drag it to junk to silence the sender or to the inbox to trust them. This path works well when managing your email from a desktop. Additionally, you can navigate to the Shield UI from the first-time sender review notification in your inbox. Click trust or silence, and the message will be automatically moved to the appropriate folder in your inbox. This low-touch, low-friction method is particularly useful on mobile. Once you've trusted a sender, you no longer need to review their messages. Because I just trusted this sender, any future messages from them will arrive directly in my inbox. You can also trust senders automatically by sending them messages or being part of the same organization. Low risk but unwanted email is held in the junk folder. This keeps noisy, but not dangerous, messages close so you can find and retrieve any potential false positives easily without leaving your email client. To reduce the number of messages hitting the junk folder, some emails can be held completely outside the mailbox in a location we call Jail. For example, a message identified as a high-risk threat would be held here to prevent it from ever reaching a user’s inbox. Using our email discoverability feature, Spotlight, you can easily locate these messages and investigate why they were held using X-ray. X-ray distills complex information into easy-to-understand insights for normal email users. It’s organic security awareness training and one of the many ways Shield makes your email safer with every interaction. Shield uniquely applies the zero-trust principle to email, offering protection far beyond traditional security models. It’s a significantly safer starting point; before you know it, you'll only get the messages you want. Better yet, you might even start to enjoy using email again.
