Cyber Threats to Aircraft Systems (2 of 3)

In this video we provide a high-level overview of threats to aircraft systems, specifically, Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B), and Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS). We begin by providing a brief introduction to NextGen, the FAA modernization effort of the National Airspace System (NAS), describe a few select critical systems, then discuss potential threats to ADS-B and ACARS. This series of videos is meant to provide an overview of applications of cybersecurity (e.g., maritime, aviation, supply chain, etc.) normally not discussed in information technology or cybersecurity courses, which help provide a broadening of a students understanding of how cybersecurity affects these domains, and its importance therein. The intended audiences for these videos include high school, community college, and lower-level university students who are interested in, or participating in, cybersecurity, information technology, or associated programs. Additionally, the first video in a series is broad enough to be understood by a general audience. This video is brought to you by the National Cybersecurity Training and Education Center (NCyTE) through funding from a National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education Grant (#1902329). 0:00 Video introduction 1:06 Review of previous video in this series 4:56 Critical flight systems 5:23 Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) 5:45 System Wide Information Management network 6:08 Flight management systems 6:22 Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) 11:01 ADS-B cyber attacks 16:34 Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) 17:15 ACARS cyber attacks
