The Dortmund Weihnachtsmarkt ( Christmas Market) has become Germany's largest Christmas market in recent years, with over 3.5 million visitors annually. The Christmas market opens in late November and lasts until New Year's Eve (usually December 30). It covers a large area in the center of Dortmund, including the Alter Markt around the street St. Reynolds Church, Hansaplatz, Kleppingstraße and Westenhellweg. Today the most famous feature of the Dortmund Weihnachtsmark is the world's largest Christmas tree with a height of over 45 meters. The tree is made of 1,700 firs from Sauerland. Twenty huge candles and 48,000 lights shine above the Christmas fair. The top is decorated with a four-meter high angel. The total weight of this structure at a height of 45 meters is 40 tons. Pyramids of candles (Christmas pyramids) In many parts of Germany, pyramids of candles (lanterns) are brought out every year to light up a room for Christmas. Two to five round wooden tiers, gradually decreasing towards the top, are built on a central rod, which is rotated by the heat of the candles going up. Each tier has figures associated with Christmas.
