War robbed her of speech: Diana’s journey from Bakhmut’s destruction to finding refuge in Kyiv

Diana, 5, used to live in the city of Bakhmut in the East of Ukraine with her parents and two siblings. When the war came children became witnesses to heavy shelling and destruction of their city. Diana, traumatized by the war and a sight of a person being killed by a collapsing building, lost her speech. With the father missing in the war and their hometown completely destroyed, the Diana, her mother Olena, brother Bogdan and little sister Masha found themselves in Kyiv, with no shelter and no means to survive. They found a safe new home at one of the Halfway Houses (mother and child houses) operated by the Ukrainian Foundation for Public Health. There are three such shelters for women with children across Ukraine, they are supported by World Vision with funding provided by Aktion Deutschland Hilft. Halfway Houses provide shelter, humanitarian, psychosocial and legal help to some of the most vulnerable women and children: single mothers, low-income, HIV-positive, orphaned and internally displaced. As part of the project Halfway Houses operate in Kyiv, Uzhhorod, and Lviv. The one in Kyiv was opened in 2013, it was the first such shelter in all of Ukraine. In these years it has housed hundreds of women. World Vision has been operating in Ukraine since 2022 and has been able to reach over 2 million people, including 300 thousand with the help of Aktion Deutschland Hilft.
