Undefeated Mike McCallum aka “The Bodysnatcher” took on “Irish” Sean Mannion for the vacant WBA Light Middleweight Championship. It was the main undercard fight for the Marvin Hagler vs Mustafa Hamsho II main event with the IBF, WBA & WBC Middleweight Titles on the line. This fight marked the first time in history where 2 women (and incidentally both named Carol) judged a world title fight; Carol Polis and Carol Castellano while the 3rd judge was Johnny LoBianco. For both McCallum and Mannion, it was their first world title opportunity. Prefight records; McCallum 21(19)-0, Mannion 29(11)-5-1. Going into the fight, Mannion had defeated top oppositions such as Gary Guiden, In Chul Baek, Jimmy Corkum & Rocky Fratto while McCallum had notable wins over Jimmy Heair & Ayub Kalule. Overall, both 27 year olds produced a tremendous fight but McCallum’s superb craft and talent triumphed over the tough Mannion who showcased unparalleled determination. It was by no means a one sided affair despite the fact that McCallum had evidently won nearly every round. From rounds 1 to 8, both traded combinations at an intense rate and had their moments each but McCallum was evidently more effective in most of the exchanges. In round 9, McCallum was rocked by a hard and blinding left hand shot. In round 10, McCallum realized he did not have his gum shield on as it was left near the turnbuckle in his corner just as the round began. He turned back and put it on before approaching Mannion at ring center. Mannion was later shoved to the canvas by McCallum whom referee Tony Perez cautioned but no point was deducted. In round 12, Mannion was jarred with a pulverizing right uppercut followed by a barrage of hard shots with a little more than 10 seconds left to the bell. In round 13, Mannion was shaken up with a fusillade of punches upstairs and downstairs but somehow he managed to hang on and return fire after his legs turned wobbly for a moment. Before the start of round 14, Mannion’s trainer Jimmy Connelly implored him to “...make this a barn fight, an alley fight!” as he was well aware that his man was well behind in the scorecards. In round 15, both warriors finished the fight in an explosive manner to the thunderous reaction of the exhilarated crowd. Mannion’s head was rocked back a number of times courtesy of a few salvos of power punches by the Kingston-born masterboxer but somehow the quintessential tough Irishman stayed on his feet and made to the final bell. After 45 minutes of thunderous tactical action, The Bodysnatcher became the 23rd WBA Light Middleweight Champion and the first ever Jamaican World Champion via lopsided UD15 with scores of 150-134, 149-136 & 149-133. The Irishman’s vaunted chin was in full display as he took unbelievable amount of punishment from the hard punching McCallum for 15 grueling rounds and held on till the end. Mannion was never once knocked down in his 15 year career of 57 total bouts. Please enjoy this highlight of an underrated classic and remember to SUBSCRIBE for continuous boxing goodness!
