Shear walls stabilize a building for horizontal loads like wind and earthquake loads. The shear walls resist these loads and transfer the horizontal loads down to the foundations. How do they work? 👉 The horizontal loads travel from the facades to the floors 👉 The horizontal loads now travel through the floor diaphragm to the shear walls 👉 The shear walls are exposed to a horizontal load at the top. The load leads to a bending moment at the bottom of the wall. This bending moment then leads to a compression zone. If this zone is too small and the stresses are higher than the resistance, reinforcement has to be added at the other end of the wall.
