Watlington is an historic market town at the foot of the Chiltern escarpment - close to the historic ridgeway - often referred to (probably wrongly) as Britain's oldest road. Other chalk hill carvings in the Chilterns include Whiteleaf Cross above Princes Risborough, and the now lost, Bledlow Cross.
