On 7 December 1995, Diana, Princess of Wales spoke at an event for youth homelessness charity Centrepoint at London's Savoy Hotel – her first speech since her explosive interview with Martin Bashir. Appearing on a panel with Shadow Home Secretary Jack Straw, the princess spoke of the young people she had met on her numerous visits to Centrepoint and the various causes of youth homelessness before urging her audience to continue its work with the younger generation. At the end of the speech, Diana received a gift from two young people, both of whom wished the Princess of Wales a happy Christmas. Diana's son, Prince William, Prince of Wales has taken up the cause of tackling homelessness that his mother championed. In June 2023, William and the Royal Foundation launched Homewards, a five-year programme aimed at demonstrating "that together it is possible to end homelessness: making it rare, brief, and unrepeated."
