Vierne's collection of pieces in all the keys was composed for organ or harmonium. It is rare to hear them all played on the harmonium, which was developed in France in the early 19th century and became a popular instrument found in churches, theatres, salons and homes. This recording uses two instruments in two different acoustic environments. Pieces 1 to 6 and 13 to 18 are played on an Alexandre Père et Fils standard harmonium (c1860) in a church with a pleasantly lively acoustic. Pieces 7 to 12 and 19 to 24 are played on an Art-harmonium by Victor Mustel (c1880) in the drier acoustic of a domestic setting.
