Wine writer Anthony Gismondi interviews Bodegas Torres General Manager Miguel Maczassek Torres during a visit to Vancouver. It's a remarkable back story of how the family recovered ancient grapes by advertising in the local paper and visiting neighbourhood backyards. 30 years ago, Maczassek's family embarked on an ambitious project to identify indigenous grape varieties in Catalonia, Spain, by running ads in local papers. They were looking for the ancestral vines of the region, many of which had been abandoned for higher yielding, "safe", varieties after widespread devastation of vineyards from the phylloxera plague of the late 1800s. The project is responsible for rediscovering over 50 ancient grapes, which have been distilled to five or six that are commercially viable. The data they have collected by examining the DNA, growing the samples for decades to discover weaknesses and strengths, is being shared with the region's growers. It is a massive project that mined the past to strengthen the future of the progressive-minded Torres Family. Interested in wine? Please subscribe to our channel and share our videos with others.
