Did you know that Karen Carpenter was an incredibly talented multi-instrumentalist that could play the drums just as well as any man, and did you know that she suffered from anorexia for nearly her entire adult life? Alongside her brother Richard Carpenter, Karen was one half of the popular music duo the Carpenters. The duo rose to prominence during the 1970s with three No. 1 singles on the Billboard charts. Sadly both Karen’s life and the band’s upward trajectory were cut short when Karen passed away at the age of only 32. ▬Contents of this video▬ 00:00 - Intro 00:55 - The Carpenters Received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Shortly After Karen Carpenter’s Death 01:14 - Paul McCartney Was a Huge Fan of the Carpenters 01:41 - Karen Carpenter Suffered from Anorexia 02:08 - The Carpenters Liked to Use Local Children’s Choirs During Their Live Performances 02:32 - The Carpenters Were Very Charitable 03:05 - The Carpenters’ Work Still Sells Well 03:37 - Richard Carpenter Was a Musical Performer at Disneyland Before Starting the Carpenters with Karen 04:03 - The Carpenters Were Savvy Investors 04:29 - Karen Carpenter’s Ghost Is Said to Haunt the Jim Henson Company’s Complex in California 04:55 - The Carpenters Were Discovered Thanks to a Television Appearance 05:27 - Karen Carpenter Could Do More Than Just Sing 05:46 - Richard Carpenter Married His Cousin 06:06 - Karen Carpenter Began Suffering from Issues with Her Appearance in High School 06:36 - Karen’s Mother Was Not a Karen Carpenter Fan 07:00 - Richard Suffered from Addiction to Pills 07:24 - Outro Like this content? Click below to check the trivia question Before forming the Carpenters, Richard Carpenter performed with musician John Bettis as a duo at Disneyland in California. The two were apparently fired from the amusement park after accepting song requests from the audience that weren’t approved for the venue. After his days performing at Disneyland, Richard began performing with his sister Karen. The two came up with the name “the Carpenters” soon after their first television appearance. The Carpenters’ first big single was a cover of the Beatles’ “Ticket to Ride”. Paul McCartney himself, who said that Karen Carpenter had one of the most angelic voices that he had ever heard, positively endorsed the single. The band would go on to see incredible success throughout the 1970s before Karen’s untimely death in the early 1980s. Both Richard and Karen experienced personal problems during the height of their fame. For Karen, it was her anorexia. For Richard, it was his addiction to prescription medications. While Richard was eventually able to let his abuse of pills become a thing of the past, Karen ended up succumbing to her anorexia and passed away in 1983. There are many things that people nowadays might not know about the Carpenters, including the fact that Karen was just as good at playing the drums as she was at singing.
