The late great Polish pianist André Tchaikowsky plays Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini on December 30, 1976, with the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Uri Segal. The very individual pianist gives a powerful performance that is, as always, uniquely personal without going against the score - his treatment of the famous 18th variation is absolutely stupendous, with a gorgeous lush treatment of the solo part before the orchestra joins him much more quietly than is the norm before building to a glorious climax. An absolutely fascinating, insightful, musical, and enjoyable reading that is truly arresting, with brilliant pianism on display, from Tchaikowsky's sumptuous tone and refined dynamic range to his incisive rhythm, magnificently crafted phrasing, and inspired voicing.
