THE ENGINEER’S PICK Curated and produced by sound engineer and artiste Anish Ponnanna, The Engineer’s Pick is a curation of Indian compositions in Indian languages sung and performed by Indian musicians. The compositions are delivered in a raw and minimalistic style, with extraordinary attention to the sound detail. Where possible, emerging artistes are discovered and featured on the channel. They use elements of these forms to build bodies of works that engage an urban audience with folk art practices. This initiative began as a means to bring lesser-known folk forms and artists to the fore. In this light, Karnataka offers up a rich tapestry of knowledge, which is archived and showcased in a way that respects the form and its practitioners. They have met inspiring and experienced practitioners across Karnataka. They also hope to make it up to our past and future mentors by making folk a part of the contemporary. Shilpa Mudbi, the co-founder of UFP, is a 1st generation city-dweller who identifies herself strongly to her ancestral roots. She has spent several years working in the hinterlands of Karnataka, documenting agrarian lifestyles and cultural politics, as a filmmaker. She has worked in theatre as an actor, vocalist, and administrator. Her artistic research is motivated by the search for counter-narratives, conscious of class and caste dynamics. Adithya Kothakota, the co-founder of UFP, is a travel, outdoor and motor enthusiast who has spent the last 3 years traveling the less beaten path around Karnataka. Being a 3rd generation city-dweller, he has undertaken this journey to question his urban aesthetics and sensibilities. He is also a percussion enthusiast and has been playing the ‘Chowdki’ and ‘Taala’ for over a year now. He can be seen playing these instruments alongside Shilpa during their performances. In the past, he has worked in one of the Big 4 accounting firms and as a project manager in an Internet of Things (IoT) start-up. At UFP he is involved with the operational, research and documentation activities.
