After the end of World War II, Czechoslovakia was taken by the Soviet Red Army, which facilitated the rise of the Communist Party in the country. The Communist Party, led by Klement Gottwald, gradually gained power and influence, with the help of Soviet support and propaganda. In 1946, the Czechoslovakian parliamentary elections were held, and the Communist Party emerged as the largest political party. However, they did not win an outright majority, and formed a coalition government with other parties. The Communist Party gradually consolidated its power in the government and security forces, and by 1948, the party had established complete control over the country. In February of that year, the non-communist ministers resigned from the government, and the Communist Party seized power in what became known as the "February Coup." After the coup, Czechoslovakia became a one-party state, with the Communist Party as the only legal political party. The government was modeled after the Soviet Union, with a centralized economy and strict control over the media and civil society.
