Simulating the 57mm Armour-Piercing Capped projectile of the British 6-pounder against the side armour of a Tiger-1. The 6pdr was one of the most common British anti-tank guns of WW2 and it could easily deal with early Panzers; the Tiger-1 posed a much more significant threat as when angled at 30°, it's side armour was impervious beyond ~525m. This simulation was the first I have conducted on Ansys, as it is can more realistically simulate ballistic impacts than Abaqus. While not perfect, this simulation features many improvements over my previous ones: momentum is conserved through conversion to particles (instead of element deletion), improved material response with increased strain, principle stress failure for the projectile, projectile cracking, softer fracturing cap, projectile spin, and it being a full model over a symmetric one. There are still a lot of improvements to be made but this serves as a good foundation for future work. This projectile set up was chosen as the un-capped version should shatter at this velocity and angle, but I am yet to implement this successfully. Additionally, there are very few shear bands present, so the thermal softening of the material needs to be refined.
