(23 Sep 2013) Kofi Awoonor, a Ghanaian poet, professor and former ambassador to Brazil, Cuba and the United Nations, has died after being wounded in the Nairobi shopping mall attack, Ghana's presidential office confirmed on Monday. Ghana's ministry of information said Awoonor's son was also injured and is responding to treatment. The Ghanaian government said it would hold a fitting burial for the academic and statesman. A book of condolences was opened as mourners gathered at the family home in Accra. "Kofi's intellect, his desire to take the individual people in poverty out of the poverty quagmire, is legendary, he spoke it, he lived it, may his soul rest in peace," said the Ghanaian Presidency Chief of Staff, Henry Martey Newman. Kofi Awoonor was born on March 13, 1935. His works depict Africa during decolonisation by combining the poetic traditions of his native Ewe people and contemporary religious symbolism.
