Somebody Else's Guy - Jocelyn Brown (1984) - bass

Some obligatory stuff :). There are already quite some playalongs on the tube, but as my channel is all about truthful reproduction of '70-'80s bass lines, maybe this can shed some clarity on what's really going on in this bass line, amid many too enthusiastic slapping versions. The base feel is a shuffle so it's not 100% binary (listen to the hihat and tambourine). The chorus is played fingerstyle, the verse slapped. That's somewhat contrary to how it's usually done. But because the bass sound on the record is EQ-d in that juicy low/low-mid way, the slapped and fingerstyle playing sounds are very alike, so it's not easy to distinguish between the two. In the fingerstyle chorus, you need to pinch the high octave using index and thumb, not by hooking your index under the string. This gives a somewhat more twangy, snappy sound, also because you can do this more towards the bridge, which adds to the condensed sound of it. And even though it seems a very busy bass line, the melody is such, that there is always enough time to reach for the octave note, pinch it, and come back in time to normal finger position for the next beat. Not sure what type of bass the original was played on, my allround BTB405QM does a rather good job of approaching the original. Yes, I have a D string that sounds fresher, because it is more recent (2yrs?) than the rest of the strings (10yrs?). This comes in handy in this song as this is the string that's pinched most. Bass plugged into mixing console, then into notebook Mic In, no effects, pre- or postprocessing, only some EQ on the bass (low and lowmid turned a tad up, pickup mix a little bit more brige pickup than neck pickup) Sorry for the slight vibrating image, it's my feet tapping on the floor, without I would not be able to get into the pocket. And even then I'm largely failing as usual :).
