Trumpet fish EatingStealth Hunter Everything you need to know in 3 min-Under Sea G- This episode is on Trumpet fish. The slowest predator in the ocean. Slow and steady wins the race. Parents carry on the conversation - There are three species of Aulostomus: A. maculatus, A. chinensis, and A. strigosus. A. maculatus are found in the Caribbean sea and off the northern coasts of South America, A. chinensis are found throughout the Pacific and Indian oceans, and A.strigosus are found in the Atlantic ocean off the coast of Africa and parts of South America Masters of camouflage, changing colors at will. These elongated tape-like fish are always entertaining to watch. Trumpet fish grow up to 36 inches long. Floating head down among the coral waiting to ambush their prey. Trumpet fish use chromatophores cells in their skin to disguise themselves while hiding in the coral. Look at the jaw on this fish. It should have been a boxer. These fish can open their mouths as wide as their bodies. When this happens, it causes a suction that pulls in a victim. Trumpet fish also hunt with larger fish. They will use the larger fish as a screen. Then fast as lighting the trumpetfish will bend over the back of the large fish and suck up a small snack. Trumpetfish have tiny teeth on the lower jaw, there are no teeth present on the upper jaw. Trumpetfish eat all types of small fish. They live on coral reefs and reef flats from 7 to 82 feet. Trumpetfish live in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans. Trumpetfish lay eggs. The female transfers the eggs to the male. The male carries the eggs in a special pouch until they hatch. Trumpetfish are close relatives to Seahorses. Both species are not good swimmers. Neither one is going to win a race. The trumpetfish is a very unusual predator. Their slow style makes you think they are not paying attention, and then they strike. You see it, but you don't realize what just happened. As always never swim, snorkel, or dive alone. Never bother the wildlife and leave only footprints in the sand when you leave. I hope you learned something today and every day.
