A Day with the PRR Heritage and NS F-Units

Tuscan Red meets Tuxedo! We follow the movement of the NS ES44AC 8102 in PRR Heritage, NS F9A 4270 and F7B 4275, and two coaches: the NS 27 Exhibit car and NS 7 Pennsylvania, which passes entirely on former PRR trackage and several relics, including position light signals and catenary poles. We chase the train from the Pittsburgh Line, to the Royalton Branch, up the Columbia seconday, then on Amtrak and finally pulling into its destination Strasburg, for NS Days. May 31, 2012: The plan was to start off at Losh's Run to get our first shot of a heritage unit, none other than the PRR unit, on PRR trackage, past PRR signals! The train snuck up after a westbound stack train passed, while I was setting up, so the desired angle never came to be, but sure enough, the Tuscan Red looks good in the morning sun passing those Position lights! Surprisingly, no other railfans were present. Track work allowed an easy chase over to Cove, where I finally ran into other railfans eagerly awaiting the rolling display of beauty! I figured the light and traffic would be bad in Harrisburg, so I bypassed down to the Royalton Branch just east of the PA 441 crossing, where the Royalton Branch splits away from the Amtrak Keystone Corridor (Harrisburg Line) at ROY, which signal can be seen in the background. Once again, I was the only railfan present. However, Columbia, by the former PRR station, was packed! So unfortunately, a shot there was not to be had, instead, we catch it passing under different catenary poles about a block east of there... Of course, by the time we got to the busy PA 741 crossing, the sun had ducked under the clouds, but nevertheless, the day was just beginning! Again, railfan luck struck at Bird-in-Hand, waiting for about 30 minutes in sunny skies with a nice view of the banked turn and catenary poles which unfortunately gave way to cloud cover once the rails started ringing... oh well! Finally, we stalk the Heritage Unit and F-Unit's on Strasburg property as they arrive and get put into their proper place until NS Days opens on the weekend. We unfortunately missed getting a shot of the 8102 posing by J tower (battery died), but there are plenty of good photos online of that event! Enjoy, and as always, thanks for watching!
