The Buchholz relay operates by sensing the pressure difference between the transformer tank and the oil conservator. When a fault occurs, gases are generated within the transformer, which increases the pressure in the transformer tank. The increased pressure causes the Buchholz relay to trip, indicating a fault has occurred. The Buchholz relay has two main parts: the relay and the alarm. The relay is responsible for tripping the transformer or circuit breaker when a fault is detected, while the alarm is used to signal the fault to the operator. The alarm can be an electromechanical device or an electronic device that can send a signal to a control panel. The main advantage of a Buchholz relay is its ability to detect internal faults in a transformer or circuit breaker before they cause significant damage or failure. This allows for prompt maintenance and repairs, reducing the likelihood of costly downtime and repairs. The main disadvantage of a Buchholz relay is that it is not able to detect all types of faults and it is not suitable for use in sealed transformers. Additionally, it can cause false alarms if not properly maintained and calibrated.
