Teaching Writing to Beginners 1: A Sample Interactive Lesson I have used this lesson many times both as a demonstration lesson with children thinking of joining a class and as a first lesson with new students. The main difference is that I don't give homework in the demonstration lesson, though I may give them the worksheet to take home with them. The lesson demonstrates a simple but effective way to teach using a child-centered approach. Notice that teaching in a child-centered way doesn't mean that the teacher is not involved. In fact, to reach their full potential as learners, the children need to interact with the teacher or somebody else that knows more than they do.. The lesson is most suitable for children who don't use the Roman script in their native language and who are learning English for the first time, or at least learning to write in English for the first time. Notice that I don't explain or 'teach' at all and there is no pattern practice outside the games. The children learn while playing, through trial and error and discovery. This example is for a small class. In a larger class, the first few card games can be played with the cards attached to the board with magnets. The children can play other games in groups.
