The series RC low pass filter described in this video is analyzed in detail in section 6.4 of my book “First and Second Order Circuits and Equations – Technical Background and Insights”. Section 6.4.1 provides an overview, including the transfer function, the magnitude of the transfer function and then the phase of the transfer function, and frequency domain Bode plots of the transfer function magnitude and phase. In later sections, each of these quantities is derived in detail, showing all the mathematical steps. Phasor diagrams in section 6.4.6 calculate the 45 degree phase lag of the capacitor voltage at the corner frequency. The QUCS simulation example in “1st & 2nd” plots the output (capacitor) voltage magnitude in dB, the resistor magnitude in dB, and the loop current as functions of frequency. This electronics tutorial video explores the first order frequency domain response of an RC low pass filter to a steady state sinusoidal input. The impedance and reactance of the capacitor, as a function of frequency is reviewed. The high and low frequency behavior of the Bode plot are discussed. The transfer function, its magnitude and phase, are demonstrated. This video uses a QUCS circuit simulation for the tutorial.
