A few excerpts from the week-long firing of an anagama. Includes cats! For people unfamiliar with the process, about halfway through I take out a "pull" -- there is a slide of it all cooled off as well. A pull is a small piece that is pulled from the kiln during firing. All of the glaze that develops is an incidental result of interactions between flame, wood ash, and silica in the clay. Taking out a pull allows one to see directly how thickly the glaze has built up. When the glaze is thick enough, the firing can end. When it is too thin, you keep stokin'.
