Using Silica for Cannabis Production Professor DeBacco Silica Silica is regarded as a jack of all trades when it comes to plants, and some even refer to this nutrient as a “Supervitamin” for plants. It is crucial to any grow room, but especially a soilless or hydroponic operation. Role of Silicon in Plants Silica makes a plant stronger, bigger, and more hardy. Here are some of the specific reasons many growers use a silica supplement. Stronger Cell Walls Bigger and Stronger Stems Increased Resistance to Environmental Stress Increased Resistance to Pathogens and Pests Improved Metabolic Functions Silicon Improved Disease Resistance In a recent study, Si was further shown to interfere with host–pathogen recognition, probably by preventing effectors and signaling molecules from finding their specific targets Silicon was also suggested to induce indirect defense mechanisms by altering the composition of herbivore-induced plant Under high tunnel, strawberry plants accumulated as much as 3% d.w. Si, which resulted in significant reduction of powdery mildew severity and higher yields. On the other hand, strawberry plants grown in soil, were unable to absorb Si, whether amended in liquid or solid form. Should Silica Be Added? Silica should be utilized throughout the entire life of the plants, from seedling to harvest. Hydroponic systems can rely more heavily upon silica supplementation, it is also useful to supplement plants grown in soil. However it can take time to accumulate in the plant and should not be a one time feeding to get the true benefits. Applying Silica Silica can be applied either as a root feed or as a foliar spray, but studies show that plants can absorb more through foliar feeding than through the root zone. Regardless of how you apply the silica, it is important to note that silica can raise the pH of your solution. As stated on product labels growers are advised to add this product first to their nutrient feed. However, do not directly mix any concentrated together.
