LongNoseThunder Reflight - Walter Turbine Powered Thunder Mustang - Carbon Fiber P-51 Replica

Walter Powered Thunder Mustang N151PK What a cool airplane! See summary below. These are some highlight clips from the flight. Enjoy! Video shot by: Ka Seng Tou Chase Pilot: Kevin Kammer Stills: Tyler Knight Engine Start: 9:55 Take Off: 10:11 Landing: 10:39 Shut Down: 10:43 Took off on runway 26L. Aircraft directionally very stable, P factor minimal and did not require yaw trim. Climbed to 2500' for the hand off to socal. 60/2000 power setting yielded 1000 FPM. Gear retraction nominal. All trims were centered before take off. Left wing was heavy but no other major retrim required. Ailerons much heavier and slower than expected. SoCal gave us block altitude 6-7,000', and asked for a Mode C cycle, which did not work, they requested we turn off the Mode C. Reaching 6,000 feet we joined up with the chase aircraft. Chase confirmed gear was fully retracted. We slowed to first indication (elevator buffet), clean configuration. Published Vs is 77 KIAS, buffet at 73 KIAS - discrepency. Added power and accelerated to 100 KIAS. Extended the gear and lowered the flaps. Did a handling check in landing configuration at 100 KIAS. Roll inertia became very noticeable in this configuration and slow. Estimate 2-1 force, with roll being heavier than pitch. In general a very stable and solid feeling airplane. Dynon screen started to twitch. Decided to RTB. Arrived Initial for runway 27L at 2,000' MSL. Power to idle. Arrived at low Key at 1400', selected gear down and started to lower the flaps. Descent rate was surprisingly high at this point. Added power to arrest descent and then finished lowering the flaps. Over the fence at 105. In the flare at 95 KIAS, decided the nose was too low and held it off for a few more seconds. Estimate touchdown on the mains at 85-90, oleos and tires soft and forgiving. Longitudinally very stable, no tendency to porpoise or drop the nose at touchdown. On the mains, directionally very stable with lots of excess rudder power. Power to idle stop until tail wheel touched, then full Beta. Ground roll was not alarming, cleared at Delta. Engine Time: 0.8 Flt Time: 0.5 Squawks: Mode C not functioning, Dynon Screen Flickering.
