Transforming Digital Data into Useful Information-March 28, 2013

THIS ACTIVITY IS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR CNE CREDITS. The purpose of this education activity is to enhance the knowledge base of Registered Nurses about the challenges associated with converting currently available healthcare industry electronic data into useful information and assist the RN in tackling these challenges and other emerging new issues in digital data use as evidenced by the development of facility level solutions needed to transform valuable information into practice improvements. The objectives of this education activity are: 1. Explain the national agenda for meaningful use of electronic data to drive down the cost and improve quality in the US. 2. Discuss levels of measurement (categorical, continuous scale, or ordinal) and their relationship to importance for correctly analyzing (i.e. "deriving meaningful use from") health care data. 3. Outline specific steps to address the challenges of utilizing data from the clinical setting 4. Describe a specific example of a metric used in a dynamic feedback loop that demonstrates the challenges of transforming data derived from the clinical setting.
