EASY IMPASTO ACRYLIC PAINTING TECHNIQUES: Painting with a Palette Knife, Add Texture, Beginner Art

I was recently asked how to go about creating a painting using the “impasto” technique, or adding texture and painting with a palette knife. I decided to put together this video to show you how to create a painting like this. Keep in mind you don’t have to be too rigid or precise when you are painting like this, it’s very much about the process. If you are choosing to do something “non-representational” like this painting, you can focus on colors, texture, lines, movement, etc. verses worrying about if it actually LOOKS like something. After you practice, you can branch out and try creating impasto or palette knife paintings of all sorts of things – landscapes, animals, still lives, really anything. If you go to Google and search for “impasto paintings” or “palette knife” paintings you will see so many different types of examples for inspiration. I would also say, don’t worry about copying my painting, rather try out some of my tips or techniques within your own painting. Enjoy the process! If you do a painting, please take a picture and tag me on Instagram or post in the comments below! FYI: I am using a 6”x6” canvas that I had painted on prior – so at the beginning of the video you are seeing it with a couple layers of white acrylic paint overtop of it, before I apply the wash. I didn’t have any gesso, so white acrylic paint works too. Usually when I re-prime a canvas, I’ll sand it down to get rid of the brush stroke texture however for this particular project, that texture didn’t matter because I knew I’d be covering it with even more texture. Tips: -Select a color scheme ahead of time, even if it’s “loose” -Let areas of paint dry before adding more layers so you can actually build up your paint -Using acrylic mediums such as thickening gel, modeling paste, gel medium, etc. can add even more texture to your painting but it isn’t absolutely necessary -An acrylic painting (especially one of this nature) isn’t ever “bad,” it’s just probably unfinished. Meaning, keep working on this painting until you enjoy it. The beauty of acrylic paint is you can keep applying layers and covering up anything you don’t like. Supplies: -Acrylic paint (heavy body or high quality works best: Liquitex or Golden are two of my faves, FYI “craft” paint tends to dry very flat) -Palette knives (you could also use popsicle sticks or plastic knives) -Paint brushes (optional, but can also be great for adding texture) -Cup of water -Palette (paper plates or even a piece of printer paper can work in a pinch) -Surface to paint on… such as canvas, canvas paper, watercolor paper, cardboard (paint a single coat of paint on the back of cardboard to keep it flat) Links: Follow me on Instagram - @jenniferfunnellvisualarts I get my music from www.epidemicsound.com
