(3 May 1995) Natural Sound The inhabitants of Bosanska Gradiska on the Croatian/Bosnian border today (Wednesday) salvaged their belongings from their bombed out homes. They were destroyed in attacks by the Croatian army yesterday. Seven people died and hundreds have fled the area in the worst fighting since rebel Serbs captured this part of Croatia in 1991. The town of Bosanska Gradiska took the full brunt of the Croatian army attacks yesterday (Tuesday) . This man's house was destroyed and today he made futile attempts to salvage something of his former life from the rubble. The town's position on the Croatian/Bosnian border meant it was a key target for Croatians wanting to seize back territory taken by rebel Serbs in the 1991 fighting. But although their houses have been ruined these people did escape with their lives. Seven people were killed including at least three children in the attacks of the last two days. Bosanska Gradiska's bridge over the River Sava was the focus for the border attacks because it provides a vital link with Bosnia and Croatia. Croatian Air Force fighter planes struck twice at the bridge but today the skies were quiet and the opposing troops are now positioned on either side of the bridge . The Croatian flag flies - a stark reminder of how far their army has come. Bosnian Serb soldiers eye this and their enemies across the river. The Croatian soldiers emphasise the advances they have made by patrolling the river and transforming buildings on the riverside into temporary bunkers with sand bags . But the Bosnian Serbs are strengthening their position with troops and tanks at the ready. Following the attacks hundreds of Croatian Serbs have abandoned their lives in Croatia to become refugees in northern Bosnia. They have gathered at Nova Topola , 20 kilometres south of Bosanska Gradiska. In the scramble to leave, many of them could only take a few possessions with them - an upsetting experience for old and young alike. They now face an uncertain future like thousands of people already displaced by the fighting in the former Yugoslavia.
