Republic of Korea Marine Corps took delivery of two Korea Aerospace Industries MUH-1 Marineon amphibious helicopters (마린온 상륙기동헬기). ROK Marine Corps will a receive total of 32 aircraft and ROK Navy will receive a total of 8 aircraft. MUH-1 is an amphibious variant of the KUH-1 Surion medium utility helicopter. It has foldable rotors, emergency floatation system, two additional fuel tanks, which allows for 1.6 times greater range, and treatment against salt water corrosion. It retains the FLIR, LWR, RWR, Flares, Chaffes, and other systems from the original KUH-1. MUH-1 will be operated from Dokdo-class amphibious assault ships ROKS Dokdo and ROKS Marado. Marines will no longer have to reply on Navy or Army for air assets and will be able to conduct independent aerial training missions and over-the-horizon amphibious assaults. Marines will also purchase 8 attack helicopters in the near future. This marks the revival of the ROK Marine Corps Aviation (해병대 항공단), which was disbanded in the 1970s when the Marines were absorbed into the Navy. The Marine Corps operated its own aviation unit much earlier than the Navy, and were even deployed to Vietnam in support of ROKMC operations there.
