Understanding Plant Hormones Professor DeBacco Hormones in General Plant hormones are regulators of almost all aspects of plant development and plant responses to their environment. Active at very low concentrations, but can have profound effects on the plant. Plant hormones are specifically regulated and controlled Hormones are Important Signal Molecules Plant hormones act as dedicated signaling molecules. A plant hormones are synthesized by the plant and are transported some distance, at least one cell diameter within the plant. These hormones have important and specific effects on physiology, growth or development in vivo (inside of a living organism) of the plant. Plant Hormonal Cycle Binding Hormones Hormones act by binding to a specific receptor, remaining bound, and not being modified while acting. Applying Hormones to Plants Spraying hormones on a plant is referred to as an exogenous addition. The rates applied often do not match plant produced levels as the goal is to better understand plant response curves to different levels. Studies can also investigate how the same concentration of a hormone may impact different species, tissues and development stages with the intention to better understand hormone impacts. Challenges with Plant Hormones Most hormones can to be synthesized and degraded by many routes making them a challenge to study. A major problem with the exogenous addition and endogenous levels experiments is the difficulty in establishing causative links between hormone and response in vivo. (A) In vivo = In living organism (B) In vitro = In glass Some studies will utilize inhibitors or mutant (knock-out) plants to aid in the study of certain hormone impacts on plant development.
